On April 21, 2023, sixty volunteers from iGEN partner companies participated in an afforestation event at Il Majjistral Nature and History Park. The gathering focused on land clearance and sustainable tree maintenance near the Manikata area.
Representatives from Aspire Global, Betsson, Tipico, Pariplay, and Myaffiliates arrived at 15:30 to assist Din L-Art Helwa Mellieha. David Azzopardi coordinated the work at a former waste disposal site for the demolished Golden Sands hotel. The location required preparation, including the removal of construction debris and the import of topsoil to restore the native garrigue habitat.
Site Restoration and Ranger Guidance
The volunteer group concentrated on long-term care rather than one-time planting. Tasks included clearing weeds around established root systems, removing cut vegetation from fire breaks near mature trees, and extracting rocks to prepare ground for future planting. Dead trees were marked for replacement to maintain site conditions.
The Malta Ranger Unit conducted a guided litter collection walk through the park. Rangers provided information on local conservation efforts, covering the prevention of illegal dumping, wildfires, unauthorized camping, and vehicle entry. Families with children were included in the participant group, with individuals divided into task teams to address different sections of the park.
The organization planted 450 indigenous trees across the area over the previous three years. David Azzopardi and his team continue to monitor the site until the vegetation becomes self-sustaining. The event structure was designed to avoid short-term initiatives that lack follow-up care, ensuring the planted trees receive necessary maintenance during their early growth stages.
