The Malta Ranger Unit recently held a meeting with WhyiGaming to review its operational status since the organization's launch in 2023. The discussion covered the NGO's current staffing levels, funding structure, and ongoing efforts to monitor environmental violations across the Maltese islands.
The organization operates on a budget supported entirely by donations and sponsors. The current team consists of a small group of full-time patrolling rangers and one administrator who also performs part-time patrol duties. The MRU plans to recruit additional volunteers to assist with field operations.
Operational Scope and Legal Limitations
The primary function of the unit involves monitoring and documenting environmental illegalities. Rangers create detailed case files containing geo-location data and statistics to assist the police with prosecutions. The MRU clarified that it holds no independent policing or enforcement powers.
Instead, the group supports the Environmental Protection Unit of the Malta Police Force and more than ten other authorities.
Recent updates include the acquisition of a new patrol vehicle, purchased using a grant from the Malta Environment Foundation. The organization faces logistical challenges, particularly in Gozo, where no Environmental Protection Unit officers are currently stationed. The MRU focuses on illegal littering, waste burning, fishing, poaching, and construction within protected zones such as Natura 2000 and the Outside Development Zone.
The MRU also prioritizes educational campaigns to increase public awareness regarding environmental legislation.
