The Tanzanian Ministry of Finance announced a 5% excise duty on betting stakes effective for the 2026/27 financial year starting July 1. The new tax applies to land-based and online gambling activities across the country.
Minister of Finance Khamis Mussa Omar outlined the budget earlier this month, detailing the levy on the value of bets including sports wagering, casino gaming, and virtual operations. The government projects the measure will generate TZS74.5 billion ($28.4 million) in additional revenue.
Ten percent of the collected funds will be allocated to the Gaming Board of Tanzania to enhance regulatory efficiency and address gambling addiction. The minister highlighted that excessive gambling participation among youth is negatively impacting the national workforce.
Market Context and Regional Trends
H2 Gambling Capital data indicates Tanzania generated $463.3 million in gross win in 2025, with projections exceeding $1 billion by 2031. The interactive segment is expected to account for $918.9 million of that total, while the black market share remained at 4.5% last year. Neighboring nations have implemented similar measures, including Uganda's 30% harmonized tax, Kenya's 5% withdrawal charge, and Lagos State's 5% withholding tax on winnings.
